Last week I posted on my FB that my relationship with social media was changing. Four year ago, I made a vow to step back from social platforms. I knew very well that for a business owner; especially a #Latina, #womanowned #smallbusiness this would be taking a gamble that would not be in my favor. But, it was a risk I gladly took, to "sit in the silence" as I like to say. (Full story as to why I did so... forthcoming)

By no means, do I say, I was inactive but I was less willing to engage. Anywho, times they are changing. My vow of self imposed "silence" is lifted.  During these four years, the work of nurturing and protecting self integrity has not re-defined who I am. It has not enlightened me to new beginnings or opened my eyes to something new waiting in the horizon. I am who I am. And I make no apologies for being a good person. Transparent truthfulness, integrity and empathy are still the cornerstone by which I keep myself and others accountable. Perfect am I, hell no! That would make me boring. Dramatic...everyday baby!! (And if you think that's bad... you don't know the definition of the word. Get a dictionary.)

So, since today is #ThrowBackThursday I thought it might be cool to go way back to when my relationship with social media started; around 2009. And of course, it began with storytelling.

Here is the first thing I ever wrote and posted from my very first social media account #Blogger

I hope it give you a little insight to my character. Looking back, so much has changed, and so little has changed... if that makes sense. LOL

I'm not a resolution maker. That kind of expectation or (pressure) to limits is not my style. I'm more purpose driven. My purpose is to be a decent, good person.  And that folks, is everyday. Sometime, I think I get it very wrong. At times, I get glimpses of getting it right.  My goals however always stand behind the motto 'Live and Let Live'.

And as I said above, I haven't changed who I am. I'm just not going to be silent anymore. There's so much room for us to talk and I hope you are willing to share your stories with me and listen to mine.

(Wow, I really did miss blogging!)

So many good things,

Katherine

A glimpse to my world...

CANNES!

The Cannes Films Festival is a spectacular place. It is largest distribution and sales market for films in the world. This year I experienced it for the first time.  Guapa Films had the honor of World Premiering its first production at the Short Film Corner ‘Alma & Alex’.

Arriving at Cannes my expectations were high. I anticipated what it would be like to be bombarded by the media, to experience the glamour of the stars on the Red Carpet and to walk along the streets where so many legends had walked before.    The sights alone of Nice, Cannes and Antibes are breath taking so the festival could only be that much bigger and better.

A few days before the festival, I ventured out to survey the magnitude of what was about to hit the city of Cannes.  Although, there were some preparations being made, the city was calm, people went about their normal day to day activities. The beaches had regular bathers catching up on their daily sun. The weather; warm, sunny –not a cloud in the sky - was magnificent!!

Luckily, I listened to the voice of reason inside my head and picked up my accreditation badges early and waited the first day of the festival. (Once the festival started, it was crazy. Lines were LONG!)

Finally the first day!  I hit the day running.  As part of the Producers’ Network I had signed up for a series of workshops run by the festival.  Everyday, I headed to the Palais (the main center where the festival houses all the sales agents, distributers, Short Film Corner, Lecture Hall, Press Room, and the main Theater houses The Debussy & The Grand Lumiere) – The Red Carpets go up from the outside into these two theater houses.

My days were long. I learned so much from established industry professionals who stressed the importance of good storytelling, integrity in the business and taking your time.

Networking was an essential part of the trip.  The Producers Network, American Pavilion, and Pantiero and Riviera became my daily “hotspots” for social gatherings, parties, and invitations.
Selecting where to go became a roulette game of chance and opportunity. It was a pleasure attending parties at coveted locales such as, The Hotel Du Cap, The Majestic, The Grand Hotel, Club Silencio, and The Martinez.

Of course, the experience worth taking was walking the Red Carpet. I was able to reserve tickets to two Red Carpet films. ‘Heli” by Amat Escalante and ‘The Immigrant ‘ by James Gray both which premiered at the Grand Lumiere.

Ah! I have to mention that walking the Red Carpet in the RAIN & COLD that started the first day of the festival was NOT fun! Those few days before when the sun was shinning in France was just a trick! The raining did not let up until the festival ended. According to locals, its some sort of festival curse or something. Go figure!

Everyday I would spend a chunk of time at the Court Metrege – Short Film Corner promoting ‘Alma & Alex’.  I would distribute our flyers, Q&A our film to viewers and track comments. Also I watched other filmmaker films. It was a great way to network!

‘Alma & Alex’ received great attention despite not being in completion or a contender for review. It was watched by two distributers and was reviewed!
There was another similar film presented at The Corner.  When viewers were asked which film presented better, ‘Alma & Alex’ took the vote!

Now that I am back, a few folks have asked, “Have you gotten what you went to Cannes for?”

Guess my answer has to be - No. You see, I didn’t go to Cannes to “get” anything. I went there to give something.
Staying open to the possibilities there is so much more I can give.

So, onwards…

A whole new worrblog!

I took a long time to write. I wasn't too sure what direction I wanted the blog to go. So, I took my Mama's advice, "When at a crossroads and you don't know which way to go, stand still for a while and enjoy the silence." Although it hasn't been all that silent...
Cory (my son) has graduated and is moving to college, two films I completed during the year are premiering during August, successful stage reading on my script has prompted early production. All of this going on has given me direction for the blog - Transition.

That is what I see all around me. A steady flow of people in transition. Everyone is moving from one place to another looking to transcend from the place they are in. I too am in that restless place. Floating from moment to moment looking for a new purpose.

I hope to find it and begin to capture it with a new perspective and sharing with you all. Join me in my journey.

Happy New Year! 2010 brought many changes and losses, and ended in the same way it came in...turbulent. I was not upset to see it end. 2011 is here with all of its promises of new beginnings. I look forward to the new adventures that lay ahead. www.guapafilms.com  Let's make Magic!

December

I know...I'm late. I haven't written. Well that is the thing with this blogging business. It can take time for thoughts to collect or for the events in ones life to accumulate enough for interesting reading. In my case, I've had way too much going on to put pen to paper (or fingers to keypad) and plunk out the yellow brick road heading towards my Emerald City. Now here we are in December. A year ago today I was keeping chronicles of my journey into the role of 'Alba' for the film "Soledad" which is still in post-production. This year I am currently working on the role of 'Alma' for an upcoming short film yet to be named, so we will call it "Untitled". This film is special because it is being produced by me. Yes folks, that is why I've been so busy. My film company, Guapa Films, LLC is now up and running and we are embarking in our first production. We are slated to begin principal photography in early January. Take a tour of our website to find out all the details of the movie. Of course, I will be blogging about the role of Alma and all the production gossip. So stay tuned.... Happy Filmmaking - KD

Round and Round We Go...

June came and went in a flash of monumental activity. I guess I should tell you all about FITP (CT Film Institute Training Program) but I'm going to switch gears and instead of sputtering out how amazing the program was, I want to take a moment to talk about what happened during the time that I was in the program.

The weekend before starting FITP my uncle Emilio passed away. He was a quiet family man. Unassuming, my father's best friend for many years. Emilio worked for the Local 201 in NYC, a Painter. He was proud of his Spanish heritage. Born in a Naval Moral De La Mata, Spain - He's loving the World Cup Win from heaven! A few years ago, Emilio was in a bodega (grocery store) when he was spotted by a director shooting a commercial in a nearby park. He was asked if he'd like to participate. He said OK. Lo and behold he ended up on a Time Warner Cable commercial and received the coveted SAG card! The hoot was he did it cause it was fun! He made friends with the director and that director would call him and check up on him often throughout the years. That's the kind of man Emilio was. Everybody's friend. He had a story ready for the tell, a joke in his pocket to lighten the mood and the door to his home open to every person willing to climb the five flights of stairs of his NYC walk up.

Emilio's Passing taught me to value Time. You are never too old to give up a dream. Keep living. Keep having FUN.

During FITP we were working hard to prepare all the materials needed to bring to fruition the production of the short film To Dye For - written by Marty Lang. It was Directed by Richard Dobbs (of Law & Order fame), The heads of each of the departments were: Angelo DiGiacomo for Camera, Danielle Rigby for AD, Mike Barrows for Grip, Garret Boehling for Lighting, Virginia McCarthy for Script, DanaJean Cicerchi for Wardrobe, ( which was the department I was in), Chat Gunther for Sound, Maria Bierniak for Location, Jim Kent & Jonathan Tessler for Set & Props. Plus, Betty Chin in the Production Office.

An "A" list team of participants and cast rounded out the team that urged forward the four weeks of intensive instructions and "hands on" experience to get the project completed.

In the meantime the weekends were spent flying up to see Dad. He was not doing well.

Right before Memorial Day he had suffered a setback with his health. Hospice had been called in. We were looking at the end. We just didn't know when that end would be.

For those of you that don't know the story: "Dad" is John my Father-in-Law. My Papi, died 16 years ago. But John, may have well been my Dad. For the past 15 years he's been just that! My Dad. When I met my husband...(who happens to be named after his Dad - John), Dad took me in, made me his daughter and never looked back.

He was there when I had my accident. Understood my pain. Talked to me about his. Shared stories about his past. I felt honored to be given pieces of himself that I know he did not share with many people. Dad was a man of few words. You knew he liked something or he didn't by the way he stared you down. He had one favorite show: Law & Order. He died on the week of our pre-production.

I didn't get to tell him who our director was - he would have gotten a real kick out of that!

Dad's passing bought out a lot of strength in people amidst the sadness;

Cory gave up his 16th birthday gracefully - His grandfather passing that same day. The day prior we had returned from visiting on Father's day The last pictures of Dad are of Cory and he sitting together. Every trip up to MA, Cory was there to see him, sharing with the family and spending time.

John (my husband) withheld grief to travel to NYC to bring back cake, gifts, and my mom to acknowledge his son's special day. He did not want Cory's day to be overshadowed and knew that Dad would want us to keep Cory's day special.

Andrew & Matthew in their ultimate wisdom kept us cheerful, because Grandpa would want us to remember the "good times" and celebrate Cory's birthday (they are wonderful cousins). They had been staying with us while their parents went on a much needed short vacation. They broke the silence that descends on a moment like this. They kept the vibrancy of life alive in my home. I will forever be grateful for their presence. The hustle and bustle of young boys running around left little time to wallow in sorrow.

My Mom came from NYC (she and Dad) had a wonderful relationship throughout the years. She had seen him the week before and had had the chance to say goodbye. To her, John my husband is her son. So, she feels his every pain and love tenfold. Dad loved that about her and they often spoke and shared stories. At family gatherings you could find them off together whispering away about the "kids". Mom had three and Dad had five so they had lots to talk about. My mom is loved by all of John's brothers and sisters ( John's brother was vacationing in the DR when Dad died - that is baby brother Chris/ by the way I'm from the DR- Dominican Republic) and Dad loved my brother and sister as well.

As this had to be, I missed one day of FITP. That was the day I traveled up to Dad's Funeral. Leave it to him not to be all fussy about the whole thing. It so happened it was on his birthday. June 24th, 2010.

Dad would have been 75 years old. He was determined to make it. He was determined to get out of that Hospice one way or another. He was determined to live free of his illnesses (COPD - Don't Smoke People!) In his stubborn way..Damn it.. He did it! (Oh, He was determined I would meet the director of Law & Order...he did that too! Just wish he didn't go to such extremes to do it. I was getting there on my own. Humm- I wonder if this was all planned.. and he knew all along.)

His gift is of Determination. Every time Dad would call me he always wanted to know what was I up to. Had I gone on an audition? Was I doing a show? What new project was I doing? Was I famous yet?

He wanted 'IT' really bad for me. I want 'IT' really bad for me too. (Maybe he can finally tell me what 'IT' is!)

So, there was my June an amazing experience sandwiched between two very sad goodbyes. Strong links in the chain of my family snapped free, irreplaceable, unforgettable.

July opens with quiet whispers of things I can't decipher yet. Possibilities from the camp at FITP? Maybe?

The Movie Project ... (I'll write a blog about it later). But, basically I will be working with the writer Danielle Berarducci. The Investor/Producer Obaid Kadwani (still a dear friend) is looking for another style of writing than what was produced by the writer that was picked from the search we did. As we could not lock down a contract we felt it was best for parties to part. Danielle and I will continue to work on the script to bring it to fruition. (It's really Awesome!)

I don't know if I will ever write a detailed blog on FITP. It would mean having to separate the emotional experience from the practical and I'm not sure that I want to. Right know I am charged with such drive to push forward, as Chuck Miller says: "I've drunk the cool aid!", I don't want to diminish that feeling by dissecting down everything lived. Maybe I should just let it be?

Then again, I may change my mind, who knows. - KD

May... May... May...

May! We are approaching its end. It was full of great surprises and accomplishments this Spring month. Completed and for viewing pleasure is a great video project I participated in for New Artist Brasco Directed by Rob Graydon and shot by Richie Mauro of Solar Plexus Studios. You can view the entire video here: http://www.youtube.com/k9drama.

May auditions yielded the wonderful results of being cast as Supporting Lead in a New Musical called "Salem Towne" in the role of Tituba. The Reading will take place this Fall at the Katharine Hepburn Theater in Old Saybrook, CT - date TBD. I will be journaling my adventure into this role and can't wait to start the process of discovery. It's been a long while since I've been on stage and doing a musical, so I'm thrilled to be back!

Another summer adventure I'm about to embark on is a five week intensive with the 2010 Connecticut Film Industry Training Program at Quinnipiac University. As I continue to grow, I do not want to place a label on who I am to become...so the journey of learning continues.

Updates:

La Soledad: When last asked, still waiting on a trailer. The waiting is hard, but I am confident that the final product will be stunning.

The Movie Project: Funny that the Month is 'MAY'... As of 5/18/2010 the project is on hold pending contract discussions.

Well, there you have it! I hope to journal classes - BUT no promises (I just got an iPad-so we'll see what I can do).

Until next time... KD

Entering Spring!

I am inspired as the world around me thaws and we head towards longer days. I am looking forward to the projects that lay ahead even though at times they seem monumental. We have selected not a "Script" but a Writer. Our journey has bought us a brilliant storyteller who is working diligently to create a personalized story. Out of the many talented scripts and ideas submitted she was able to capture the essence of what we were looking for. We do have a second Script selected as our alternate. Working together from the ground up will be the best way to bring this project to fruition and make the "Magic" we all so long for. We thank all who submitted a script and/or concept/idea and are humbled by your generosity and talent. At a later post I will announce the name/s of the Writers and their Script/Titles. Thank you!

Opportunities!

Each day we are tempted with the ideas of grand opportunities. Ways to fast forward our careers; jumpstart into the fast lane to top directors and producers. Most of these ideas live inside our own heads. We believe we hold the magical key that can open the door through the relationship of a friend who knows a friend, an agent we just became acquainted with, through the hard work of a film/play that is doing well, etc. Sometimes these venues do us justice. Most times they are short lived and we go back to work to find another vehicle to build upon our short lived success. This business is HARD. And then... there are those times when out of the blue, without warning or prompting, a situation lands on your lap with all of the favorable conditions needed for you to advance and reach a goal. It comes wrapped tightly, coded neatly, in the word investment. $$$ Ah. Where does the creative stop and the business begin? Or have they always co-existed and we just played ignorant out of convenience? I mean, we are after all a Product. Aren't we???

GOOOAALLL!!!

2009 is almost at an end. Ride off on the damn horse ye came in, I say! Why, because like most, I too have felt the pinch of this brittle time. I have seen and heard desperation creep into the most loving of people to turn them into cynical, cold, hard creatures cable of lashing out at one another. The year started with an upward momentum only to turn and wreak havoc upon dreams by stilling the waters to creativity with no funds for the arts. Everywhere: schools, theaters, films; cuts were being made and actors were feeling the brunt of having to "work for free" for the love of the art. Well, that's all good and dandy but we still have to put food on the table and kids through college. Although some of us may be luckier than most, not all can afford to pursue acting "just for the passion" there has to be compensation. Let's face it, dance classes, acting refreshers, photos, hair/makeup - all the things we need to go out there and "do our jobs to get the jobs - cost money! So, 2009 yielded very little. The year with its hope and promise did not deliver! Or did it?Have we become so wanting of more that we cannot recognize the accomplishments of the reigning year. As I reflect upon what I set out to do in 2009 I must put aside my negativity and acknowledge what I did achieve. Let me recount:
  • Fall 2009 wrapped filming on short film titled 'La Soledad' Graydon/Mauro/Spence- Release dates unknown
  • Spring 2009 filmed on film Salt - Philp Noyce/Columbia Pictures - Release Summer/Fall 2010
  • Spring 2009 wrapped feature 'Bittersweets'-Ashley Miles/Nuance Productions - Release dates unknown
  • Winter 2009 wrapped short film - 'La Curandera' - Talia Mazzarela/Faux Boheme Productions - Release dates unknown
  • Filmed Commercial "Asado" for Verizon Wireless - Summer 2009 - Release dates Summer 2009
  • Filmed Short 'Pass It On' for the O'donnel Company - Summer 2009: Go to http://www.youtube.com/user/k9drama to view my videos.
Looking back, I am grateful for every experience. Some came with pay, some without. Each one gave me great benefits. They hold their own sense of wonder, excitement, anticipation, frustration and disappointments. I learned for myself that I am seeking too hard and demanding to much from an industry that is suffering right along with me. I must work on the virtue of patience. I must not lose sight of my perspective or my goal. By all means, I do not concede an "all was swell" in 2009. I will still be happy to see it go. However, considering that my one resolution last January was to get an Agent (and that was accomplished last week), I'd say I hit all of my goals for the year and then some!

Being Alba - Filming

Anticipation is a great thing. It keeps you focused and moving forward. Prior to the weekend of Nov. 7th-8th. 2009 the adrenaline was so high as I prepared to breathe life to Alba for the film La Soledad. Rehearsals kept the cast and our Director Rob Graydon on a constant journey of discovery and soul searching for who these characters' were and what motivated them. Now as the day of shoot fell upon us the focus turned to technical worries of arriving to set on time, making sure wardrobes were complete, hair and make-up were done, food was available, crew and staff/PA's were accounted for. A flurry of activity demanded so much attention that the cocoon of our small acting family seemed to have disappeared. It was exciting, scary, disturbing, violent and sad. Why... because it meant that we were in production... and soon we would be done, it would all be over. I chose to join in with the group that was driven from the city to our location in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I'm glad I did! I had the opportunity to spend more quality time with the great people on this team. Upon arrival, I had no choice but to be taken a-back when at set-up of Richie Mauro Team the home we were using was transformed into a set. I mean this was no, camcorder with a few people running around shining lights here and there, like I thought it was going to be. No folks! This was a Movie SET! Like I've seen Richie at before! With all his lights and tons of people! Two Cameras! Dolly! Grips! Sound! You name it... We had it and more! We had all the perks too! Set & Art Designers/Directors, Photographers, Script Supervisors, Makeup and Hair, plus more. The best part is that each and every person was so nice and easy to work with. Oh... did I mention that we got fed like royalty yeah! Perks! Kudos to Alanda Spence - Best Producer EVER So, all good things right? Now I have to work. And that we did folks. Fourteen straight hours on the first day and about sixteen hours straight the second. Glamorous! See, film is VERY different than theater. In theater, once you are done with rehearsals and the show is up, you play in front of your audience, you hope for the best (that you don't forget your lines or song) and then the performance is over. There is no second chance. The moment has passed. But in film, those moments are captured over and over again to be replayed for eternity. There are second chances for mess ups! In theater you work with your fellow actors and they are your anchors to your story. Your Director guides you on how to tell your story upon the stage then cuts you loose on opening night. In film there is another aspect to consider. An actor that is introduced late in the process. He is the camera! He come in after you have worked so hard to find your character and stops you midpoint of a scene to re-adjust himself, refocus, relight and re-align. He's selfish and intrusive. Often he is in the way, magically he is in every scene, and never, ever, can you directly look into or at him. Yet, he is the actor I want to dance the most graceful waltz with. Through him and only through him does Rob and Richie capture the essence of what the story is truly about. So, I work hard. I do each take over and over. I give more each time. I forget to breathe, blink, eat, even go to the bathroom. I'm Alba - for every second, from every inch, from every pore. When Rob or Richie called they nearly tripped over me - I'm right there. I do my best not to be too far away. Thank God, for my guardian angel Erik Shearer(Sean, Brian) who through his grace made me the most 'delish' sandwich, remembered I'm allergic to mustard and made me laugh...without him...well, let's just say that there are people you meet that leave footprints in your heart... The hours pass. To my surprise quickly, too quickly. Sunday. The day comes to a close and at 2AM we wrap. It's amazing that we have completed everything we have set out to do. We are done. Alba is Wrapped. Now what. I volunteer to help out for Next Saturdays' shoot. Closure. I'm dropped off at home. Exhaustion finally hits me. I sleep until 4pm the next day. When I finally have the strength to get up, I feel restless. I'm back to the real world. Boy, I'm going to be hard to live with for a few days. No new projects pending. Back home I finally read emails... Congrats!, Great job!, Thank You!....From everyone.... Click... I turn off the computer, I just can't face it yet. It's over. I'm not Alba anymore. So, if I'm not Alba....Who am I? ____________________________________________ (Donations are still being accepted, Please consider a donation so we can go to Festival with our film! Becoming Alba - Part 2 - Rehearsals

The rehearsal process is always grueling! You start out with an idea in your head about who your character is, or where you want to go, only to find that you've only scratched the surface. Discovery, as it's deemed in all the acting classes, is another word for digging in deep into those deep crevices within your soul you never want to go in to! From there you pull out those emotions you've stored away never to feel again. How you get to those emotions, and who feeds you the life-line so you don't sink into a deep depression is your Director. So, he/she better be good!

You see, the script allows you to have a few lines, place a voice to how your character may be feeling, but it doesn't give you everything, like:

The who, what, where, when? what is this characters' pre-life ( their experiences, age, growing up event, daily routines, etc.) what does this character want. How will he/she get it? What are the obstacles? Only the actor has these answers' locked' deep inside and it takes discovery to find all of the answers. The Director can guide the actor(s) through his/her knowledge of the other characters in the story, understanding from the script writer (when available), and his/her own vision of the story to build and complete the story. With this bit of acting lesson behind us, I now let you in on the rehearsal process for La Soledad. Not skipping a beat on anything I've mentioned above, I say that Rob Graydon, our Director is amazing! Not because he may be reading the blog, or anything...but because he simply is! Here is why: the one thing that he has done that is not mentioned above is collaboration with the actors. Maybe it's because I've worked mainly on stage, but rarely have I had a Director ask me..."what are your thoughts, Katherine, what are Alba's thought here?" WOW! It is totally liberating. My input counts! His most constant note to us is "Listen...always listen, keep listening." For me this has been the life line that has allowed me to delve into the deep places during discovery. Where with Dominique, the actress who plays Soledad, I instantly knew how to 'speak' to her character, through Rob, I've been discovering Alba's voice within and for the rest of her family. As people we depend on all our senses to guide us. As a person who has lost the gift of sight from my TBI, I am dependant on my other senses to complete what I cannot always see. Sounds, words, inflections in tone, and body motions become so important on how I react to the world around me. Now double that when I prepare for a scene. My sight no longer delivers the first signals for responses. These come to me through my ears. It has taken 7 years and 5 months to retrain my brain to receive information this way. But, don't confuse hearing with listening folks -cause, there truly is a difference. In life, I hear cars as they speed by me, they help me gage how I drive. I hear the tapping of the water in the pipes that tells me I'm about to be scalded from putting the hot water knob too far to the left, I hear the sizzle of water I sprinkle as a precaution on the stovetop, after years of burning myself from not seeing which burner was too hot. But, I listen...to the inflection in Cory's tone as he tells me about his day. Then I know if it was good or bad. I listen to the whine of each dog... I know which one means: "I'm hungry, I'm lonely, or I need to pee NOW!" I apply these skills to my acting. I take in every line delivered as an emotional wave. It is a physical sensation. It prickles my skin. When that happens I know I've done it well. I've got it. We've made contact. In becoming Alba, I have had moment such as these. I am lost for those few minutes between the real world and the world of Danielle Baraducci (Screenwriter). Then Rob gently pulls us back and allows us to decompress and return. Only to connect to another piece of the dialog that later build upon another layer of this never-ending story. Next week I breathe eternal life into Alba. Still, I am asking: Is she strong? Is she right? Would I, could I..do the same thing she did? Am I like her? I may never answer these questions. They may never need answering. In becoming Alba, at least I had the courage to try. That's just the point.

Becoming Alba... Part 1 - Auditioning

When I first submitted for the role of "Alba" in the film La Soledad I thought "cool, I could play this, I mean they are looking for a Mom type, Latina, Spanish speaking, good emotional range, All good! Right up my alley. I didn't give it much thought on what type of film it might be. What other types of characters they were looking for. What intentions were behind the posting in the casting notice. I had been submitting so much for the past few days that honestly I didn't even think I was going to be called. I've been in a downward slump for awhile. So when the email for an audition timeslot came in I was excited and looked forward to it. I readily agreed and anticipated the arrival of the script. Then came the call that I had to fly to Ohio. I would be missing the audition. I professionally sent my apology email saying I would not attend and never looked at the script. I flew out during the week of Oct. 3rd. and never gave it another thought. As luck or fate would have it, I received an email two nights before flying back home asking if I would be available for an audition. The role of "Alba" was still available. I said yes, I would love to audition. As it happens they scheduled my audition for 10AM the day right after my arrival. Did I mention that the closest flight I could get arrived at 12AM and flew into New Haven, CT which is 2 hours away from NYC where my audition was scheduled at! I got home. Kissed my husband and son which I saw for about 15 minutes, printed out the script from my computer, readied my clothes, picture and resume for the morning and headed for a few hours sleep. Three hours later I was up, showered and ready for my two hour drive into the city for my audition. Ah! the life of an actress. Oh... did I forget to mention I still haven't read the script! I arrived at Shelter Studios in NYC with 15 minutes to spare. I was hoping for more time, but parking in NY on a Sunday...well you know. I quickly apply lipstick, check myself and head to the building. When I reach the elevators, I notice this very petite girl get on - she has the most amazing eyes! The kind that look into. They are big and round, haunted almost. I can't stop looking at her as we are taken up to the 12th floor. She reminds me of my dog Mia when we are getting ready to go out somewhere, she's excited and anxious at the same time. Mia raises her eyebrows and starts to smack her lips in anticipation..."where are we going mommy. Is it a fun place. Or am I going back to the scary shelter?" Even after 4 years she still has this look like she might be taken back. That was what this girl looked like... like she was going somewhere great, but maybe not so great-she didn't know. At that moment I thought to myself...she must be auditioning for the role of Soledad and if the Directors and Producers of this film have any type of talent then they have to hire her cause she is it. I don't know why I thought that....I hadn't read the script yet! There was just something about this girl! I call it "magic", and I wanted some of it. From that moment I wanted a chance to read with her. When we got up to the floor I headed to the required area. wrote my name down on the waiting list and got out my picture and resume. For the first time I looked at the script. The scene was Alba and Soledad (her daughter) washing dishes. The scene calls for a very emotional talk between us two (I won't go into it) - NO SPOILERS HERE! I was scared! I hadn't prepared. I had no pre-life to this character. I didn't know what to give her for a motivation. How to approach the scene. Was she happy, mad, crazy! Do I act like: me, my mom, my neighbor, the lady in the grocery store, Julia Roberts, who? When they called my name, I walked in and right before looked over to the girl who was now sitting beside me. She smiled. I knew at that moment I wanted to whisper the words into her ears. So when I walked into the room that is how I auditioned. I whispered the words. They asked me to wait around for a few minutes. I did. I headed to the waiting room and there finally read the script. Oh my! Never have I fallen in love with words in such a short time as I did at that moment. I wanted to cry but, really, what would people say, "ok another crazy actor in our waiting room". Then out of nowhere there she was the girl! She was asked to wait around too! We started talking. Her name is Dominique. I could feel her heart beating as she sat close to me. She emanated such strong energy I could barely absorb it as she thew it all my way. She was a bundle of sparks, filled with emotions just waiting to burst out. I knew that together we would create a moment that hopefully one if not both of us would get a part in this film. So we talked and I found out she was not an actor. This was her first audition ever! I told her my thoughts - she was Soledad. I gave her some things to think about as she read the lines. I asked her some questions about her life. After about 10 minutes it was as if we knew each other for a lifetime. We did the scene and after two tries they weren't lines anymore , they felt so natural. When the Producer came to get us we walked into the room and readied ourselves for the read. We didn't need the script. We could feel the energy around us. We stood so close to each other - I could feel Dominique's body tremble. I whispered into her ear...use it , just let go... We started our scene... Magic!
